History of Richland
In 1827, a German immigrant by the name of Henry Audulf established a community under the name of Chisholm, and later, on November 26, 1889, it was incorporated as Richland by the Georgia General Assembly.
Richland is located in Stewart County. The county was created on December 23, 1830, and is named for Daniel Stewart, a Revolutionary War veteran. John Audulf, son of Henry Audulf, became the first postmaster of Richland in April 1839.
In 1885, the Americus, Preston and Lumpkin Railroad (APL) laid the first rails, east to west between the 3 towns. The APL Railroad joined the Savannah, Americus and Montgomery (SAM) Line in 1888. In 1890, the line was extended to the Chattahoochee River.
The Americus Investment Company built the historic Richland Inn in 1889, along with many of the historical brick and mortar storefronts that still line Broad Street and by 1890, Richland had a population of 1500.
Bessie Lillian Gordy Carter, mother of a President Jimmy Carter, was born in Richland in 1898, and the Gordy home still stands on Broad Street, east of the downtown area. Her father, Jackson Gordy was postmaster for a time.
Richland is a quiet, beautiful place to live and work. Richland is close to Providence Canyon, one of the seven wonders of Georgia. Florence Marina offers camping and fishing on the Chattahoochee River and Columbus and Fort Benning are just 30 miles away.
